So very true! I sliced the top off three of my fingers on a mandolin several years ago. My husband super glued one of them, but the othets were so bad I had to go to the ER. The doctor was impressed with my husband's work: he didn't touch that one, just cleaned and fixed the others in the same way! My husband also threw away the mandolin...
Ouch! Those mandolins are unforgiving. Although of all things to cut yourself on, the mandolin is best case scenario. It’s always a very clean cut and it heals better than any other cut.
This is a great post, I'm so glad you're on the mend! Not long ago, my 11 year old daughter almost sliced off a good chunk of her thumb while cutting apples. She remained impressively calm and told my husband what happened. He very calmly cleaned her and glued her back together. We dipped her thumb in a paste of coconut oil mixed with organic yarrow powder in between bandage changes to keep it clean and disenfected. A month later you could barely see the wound. My default is to run around like a silly chicken with its head cut off in these scenarios, and I'm so grateful for my husband's and daughter's stoicism.
I’ve got a well supplied first aid crate thanks to having a physician and paramedic in the family. It’s one of my gifts to a new mum is a kit for home along with a purse kit.
I buzzed my finger trying to clear falafel out of the stick blender. (I maintain the design of this particular blender was an accident waiting to happen, but also don’t make falafel with a stick blender. 🤦🏼♀️), I was home alone, newly married and thankfully, our apartment was 300 meters from the nearest hospital. I bound up my finger, called my husband who was on his way home from work (an hour commute) and let him know I was taking myself up to the emergency room.
The staff there were very sympathetic and were a bit impressed by my insistence that I oversee everything they were doing. (If you’re waving sharp pokey things around me, I want to see exactly where they are!) my poor husband hearing my informing him of the hand injury, nearly fainted whilst filling up the car… he is not much use with hand injuries, the poor thing.
It’s funny how, no matter how clearly one knows better, these accidents still happen. I was bracing a mop head on my leg while trimming it down with a box cutter (to use as a stamp for faux bricks), and literally thought to myself, “This is really a stupid way to do this, I’m going to get hurt” JUST as the box cutter skittered off the plastic and plunged into my leg. 🙄 Here’s to swift recovery from injuries that happened despite knowing better. 🥂
It’s so true! I have a fear of cutting crusty bread and do so all the time! “Be careful “ I tell myself, “turn it around, the knife is going to slip” I say.
Thank you for the links. I’ve needed to purchase the glue and strips for ever and you made it so easy. I always forget when left to my own devices! Our boys (14/11) love knives and carving and all the things and our 3 year old is convinced she’s big enough to do all the things too. I’ve made a few ED visits with knife wounds in the boys. Well. One boy. And every time my Boston FD brother in law is like “don’t you have the glue?!” 🤦♀️

Good for him!! On both counts! Those things are super scary! Why up the ante haha

Took off a tip of a finger here too! While my “cut proof” gloves were in the drawer below my workspace. I use them now 🤦♀️

Ah, yarrow! It's a great remedy.
My daughter put cayenne pepper on my cut! Wowsahs that hurt. But I think it helped it heal.
Wow! Cayenne! That's impressive.
It was... impressive LOL 🙀🔥

This is why all our knives are dull. :D I'm afraid of this. We somehow manage.
